The first year with Eli was incredible. The amount of growing we do during our first year of life is absolutely amazing. I’m still in complete awe with how quickly it came and went.
Everything our babies do during the first year of life, every single milestone achieved, gets them closer to the BIG DAY: the moment they gain the strength and figure out how to take those first steps into complete freedom.
For Eli, this hasn’t happened 100% just yet, but he has been working very hard to get there and we know the moment will come any day now. Am I ready for this? I really hope so! He already keeps me on my toes.
I refused to buy shoes for Eli, of any kind, before he walked. I really didn’t see the need for them. That was until the day he stood by himself for the first time outside (around 10 months). The worry came almost instantly; how do I keep his chubby little feet safe? Where do I find a pair that will feel comfortable and not interfere with his balance?
We bought a few pairs at the mall but weren’t completely sold with any so we just watched him like hawks when we were outside to make sure he didn’t accidentally step on anything dangerous.
A few weeks ago I was talking with Leila, owner of Willow & Fig, and she offered to send me a pair of moccasins to try out. I was unsure of what size Eli was but she was so helpful and walked me through the right way of measuring Eli’s foot. We figured out his size and in less than a week the adorable little shoes were with us.
I inspected every inch of them. Right away I noticed how soft they were and easy to handle. In less than a minute, the shoes were on his feet; I had the easiest time putting them on! He immediately brought one shoe up to his mouth (teething still going strong) and played with them for a bit. When he was over the excitement of new shoes, guess what? They were still on his feet! The elastic on them makes it so easy to put on but are strong enough to not fall off his feet.
I swear these shoes were meant to be. That same evening, Eli took his first steps! Three steps towards Dad…tears everywhere! I knew inmediately I wanted these to be part of his first birthday party so I started to look for the perfect outfit to go with them.
Eli turned ONE a week ago and every day since, he has learned something different. He hasn’t completely let go to walk alone but he’s taken 6 steps and loves holding our hands to walk for a few minutes at a time.
The party was a huge success and everyone loved the shoes. I kid you not when I say every single person pointed them out when they first saw him…so many “ooooooos” and “awwwwwwws” were given.
He’s been wearing this pair of shoes daily on our evening walks to the park. I feel comfortable letting him stand on the sand and walk around with us while he continues to gain the confidence and strength to achieve his goal. The shoes still look like new, no tears or scratches. He doesn’t mind wearing them at all, not really sure he even notices he has something on…they are that comfy. When they get a little dirty I spot clean them and that’s it.
Being the sentimental mother that I am I have decided I want to put this pair away as a keepsake of his first steps and birthday. Can’t wait to purchase many more! You can buy yours here. ***Head over to my instagram page for a chance to win a pair!
